The Pentateuch is the first 5 books of the Old Testament, dealing with the creation of the universe and humankind as well as the plan of God’s restoration of humans after their rebellion (Genesis), the deliverance of Israel out of Egypt as well as the place where people could meet with God (Exodus), God’s laws for living among pagan ancient Near Eastern neighbors (Leviticus), the guidance and patience of God despite human disobedience (Numbers), and the preaching and application of God’s Law to his people poised to enter the Promised Land (Deuteronomy).

Everyone knows that despite the incredible potential of humankind and creation as well as the high aspirations and hopes within us, something went wrong. In people we see both dignity and depravity. In creation we see astonishing beauty as well as natural disasters, cruelty, and the pollution of creation by humankind.

GENESIS

Genesis gives us the authoritative account of how God made humans and creation good; but volitional beings—angelic and human—rebelled and brought spoilage and corruption to humanity and creation. God’s rescue plan started with one man, Abraham, and a people from his loins, Israel.

EXODUS

Exodus shows us the birth of Israel as a nation, the deliverance of Israel from Egyptian oppression, and the construction of a mobile temple (tabernacle) where God meets his people, receives sacrifices for their sins, and directs people to their destination.

LEVITICUS

Leviticus spells out the sacrificial system and reveals the character of God over against Israel’s pagan neighbors. He does this through laws which show them how to concretely live out their love for God and obedience to him in their new covenant relationship.

NUMBERS

Numbers reports the progress, discipline, and preparation of the people of God for their new home, Canaan. Despite apostasy, God raises up a new generation to inherit His promises.

DEUTERONOMY

Deuteronomy is the application of the Law of Moses through the preaching of Moses to the people of Israel ready to conquer and occupy the Promised Land.
